One of the most common questions we get asked is how often PAT testing needs to be done. The short answer is that there is no single legal requirement stating a fixed frequency. The longer answer is that the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment provides clear guidance based on the type of equipment you have and the environment it is used in.
It Depends on Your Environment
A computer sitting on an office desk in a clean, dry environment is at much lower risk than a power tool being used on a construction site. The testing frequency should reflect that difference. As a general guide:
- Offices and shops: every 2 to 4 years
- Hotels and holiday lets: every 1 to 2 years
- Industrial and workshop environments: every 6 to 12 months
- Construction sites: every 3 months
Visual Inspections Matter Too
Formal PAT testing is only part of the picture. Users should be doing basic visual checks of their equipment regularly. Look for frayed cables, cracked plugs, burn marks, or any signs of damage. If something looks wrong, take it out of service until it has been properly tested.
What the Law Actually Says
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. The regulations do not specify how often you need to test, but they do place the responsibility on you to make sure your equipment is safe. PAT testing is the recognised way to demonstrate that you are meeting this duty.
