Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process of checking electrical appliances for safety. It involves the pat tester doing a visual inspection and specialist testing equipment to ensure plugs, cables, and appliances are safe to use.
Why is PAT testing important?
PAT testing reduces the risk of electric shock and fire. It helps businesses and landlords meet their legal duty of care and provides peace of mind that equipment is safe.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement in the UK?
There is no single law that says you must carry out PAT testing, but UK regulations such as the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require all electrical equipment to be maintained safely. PAT testing is the accepted way to prove compliance.
Who needs PAT testing?
Any business, landlord, or organisation responsible for electrical equipment used by employees, tenants, or the public. This includes offices, schools, shops, holiday lets, rental properties, and workshops.

The frequency depends on the type of equipment and environment. High-use or high-risk items may need yearly tests, while low-risk items in offices may be tested every 2–4 years. We can advise the right schedule for you.
Can I do my own PAT testing?
You can carry out basic visual checks, but proper PAT testing requires training and specialist equipment. Using a qualified tester ensures compliance and valid certification.

Is PAT testing being phased out?
No. PAT testing is not being phased out. UK law requires employers and landlords to keep electrical equipment safe. The Health and Safety Executive no longer recommends automatic annual testing, but regular testing by risk level is still the recognised way to comply.
Can any electrician carry out PAT testing?
PAT testing does not have to be done by an electrician. It must be done by a competent person with the right training and equipment. Many qualified PAT testers are not electricians but are trained specifically in appliance safety.
How long is a PAT test valid for?
A PAT test certificate does not have a fixed expiry date. The validity depends on the risk assessment and environment. For example, site tools may need testing every year, while low-risk office equipment may go 2–4 years.
